The Bible says God has crowned you with His favor.

When you go out each day, you need to imagine yourself wearing that crown! When you learn to expect God’s favor, you will receive tremendous blessings.
Don’t let fear, the opinions of others or life’s distractions keep you from standing firm and enjoying God’s favor … on a relationship, your health, your career or your emotions. Many people are not enjoying God’s favor because they’re not activating their faith.

God is longing to bless you beyond anything that you can ask, think or imagine!

It only takes one touch of God’s favor to completely turn your situation around! Thousands of people tell us that God has used this ministry to change their lives. That’s God’s favor!

Pride - Movie with Terrance Howard & Bernie Mac

The year is 1973, and Jim Ellis (Terence Howard), a college-educated African-American, can’t find a job. Driven by his love of competitive swimming, Jim fixes up an abandoned recreational pool hall in a Philadelphia slum with the help of Elston (Bernie Mac), a local janitor. But when the pool hall is marked for demolition, Jim fights back – by starting the city’s first African-American swim team. Recruiting troubled teens from the streets, Jim struggles to transform a motley team of novices into capable swimmers – all in time for the upcoming state championships. But as racism, violence and an unsympathetic city official threaten to tear the team apart, Jim must do everything he can to convince his swimmers that victory, both in and out of the pool, is within their reach…

B+
By Owen Gleiberman
Owen Gleiberman is a film critic for EW

The way an actor sounds is as important as how he looks, and Terrence Howard, given the force and directness of most of his characters, has a way of catching you off guard with what a delicately intense, satin-soft instrument his voice is. His gaze may be steady as a rock, but when he talks, there's a hint of a quaver — almost a shadow memory of tears. In Hustle & Flow, he gave that dime-store Memphis pimp a lazy, caressing smokehouse drawl, the kind that could nudge an invitation into a threat (or vice versa). Now, in Pride, a strategical gearshift of a movie set in Philadelphia in 1974, he takes on the role of one of those inspirational tough-love sports coaches, and Howard, once again, commands through quiet, summoning the gentle music of a man who is literally trying to find his power as he speaks. (Or maybe the fact that he's quiet is the real sign of power.) That tremulous baritone isn't weak; it's what makes Howard's strength human. He uses it to invest the film with so much casual discovery and verve that it's as if this sort of role had never been invented before.

The actor wears long sideburns, a domesticated guidance-counselor Afro, and the inevitable array of plaid jackets and slacks to play Jim Ellis, a real-life swim coach (the film is based on a true story) who, in the early '70s, founded the Philadelphia Department of Recreation swimming team. After being turned down for a job at a local white high school, Ellis wanders into the Marcus Foster Recreation Center. The place is as junky and useless as something out of Escape From South Philly — it's a playground of trashed dreams — and the kids shooting hoops on the netless outdoor court razz him like he's some uptight Negro alien. Inside, there's a swimming pool, but even that's overwhelmed by the clutter of abandonment. The degraded setting is the inner city in limbo, caught between the twilight of the civil rights era and the dawn of hip-hop, and that blasted physical space works for the movie. Pride really is about the audacity of hope. It's not that Ellis has to sow these kids with the values of a noble institution. He has to create the institution, building it from the ragged ground up, and that, along with Howard's reflective, almost melancholy performance, makes Pride more organic than the usual cookie-cutter sports-montage movie.

As Ellis molds the ghetto kids into a swim team, the film isn't exactly big on showing you the nuts and bolts of how they learn the butterfly stroke. I would have liked more detail, but where the director, Sunu Gonera, is shrewd is in parsing, from every angle, the emotions of the title. When the P.D.R. crew face off against a privileged white team (their coach is played by a convincingly jerky Tom Arnold), they botch the meet by messing around, and you feel the wounded arrogance of their ill-disciplined antics. By the end, of course, they're oozing self-respect. Bernie Mac, as the rec center's janitor, earns laughs by turning gibes into folk wisdom. Pride doesn't have much surprise, but it's a formula picture of genuine feeling, with Terrence Howard proving once again that he wouldn't know how to keep it less than real. B+

Cuttin' Up
A thoughtful comedy for barbershop octet, tinged with overtones of Eugene O'Neill.

The West Coast premiere of "Cuttin' Up," based on the best-selling book by Craig Marberry and a co-production with the Cleveland Play House, is not only a rewarding night out at the theater, but it also has the dramatic integrity and good-natured humor to carry it forward as a possible minor classic.Initially, Israel Hicks' directing seems to impose too much discipline on the performance. However, the talented cast gradually loosens up and expands into their roles as the night wears on.

The result has enough of a hint of Eugene O'Neill to absorb the audience in the lives of Randolph-Wright's memorable characters, with or without their abundant repertoire of aphorisms, anecdotes and one-liners.

The story line might be relatively uneventful, and the denouement not much more than an emotional sigh, but the interaction of the actors, the structured direction and the knife-edged timing make the evening a genuinely rewarding theatrical experience that has little in common with recent black barbershop movies.

Randolph-Wright deftly balances the usual philosophizing about the role of barbershops in the specifically black social and cultural fabric with extremely well-crafted dialogue that smoothly and unobtrusively propels the story forward. The occasional cliches are far outweighed by the many funny lines. One sequence in particular, with Harvy Blanks and Bill Grimmette (who also nearly steals the show as Oprah Winfrey's barber father) as dueling preachers hilariously strutting their verbal and physical stuff, is priceless. Throughout, the humanity, dignity and quality of both the solo and the ensemble work, deflecting occasional potential stereotypes as if brushing off flies, amply compensates for the "lessons in life." The cast itself doesn't boast any star names, only star performances. Dorian Logan's Rudy is bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with an underlying seriousness that makes the audience care. Darryl Alan Reed's Andre, the play's central character and a figure of real substance, wields a complex command and restraint that gives the play a moving, occasionally tragic cast. And Adolphus Ward's Howard is a wonderfully colorful and wise portrayal, with just a subtle touch of W.C. Fields.

As the three women in Andre's life, Iona Morris does an amazing job, each characterization as different as it could be in terms of appearance, audience response and sympathy, and stage presence. And the rest of the cast is by turns brilliant and resourceful in handling their multiple roles. Michael Carnahan's set is a magnificent tribute to Marberry's boyhood barbershops in South Side Chicago, where he grew up.

Three rich red leather barber chairs rest like coronation thrones upon the mirrored stage. The wings are used for cameos and flashbacks exits and entrances. There is a great variety and range of costumes by David Kay Mickelsen, too. But though the well-chosen music on the radio (sold in the lobby afterward as a CD), used to identify the personalities of the three main characters (smooth jazz, cool rhythm and blues and hip-hop), is useful and at times illuminating, initial sound levels verge on covering the voices.
